Penang Nightlife for Men (2026): Where to Drink, Eat & Enjoy a Night Out

Planning a night out in Penang? Don’t waste your evening moving between random bars, only to find that the live band has finished, the cocktail bar is fully booked or the kitchen has already closed.

George Town has some genuinely interesting nightlife options, from award-winning hidden bars to live music venues, private karaoke rooms and nasi kandar shops serving food well after midnight. The better places offer more than just somewhere to sit with a beer, and you don’t necessarily need a huge budget to enjoy them.

Whether you’re visiting Penang alone, having a few drinks with colleagues or planning an evening that includes an escort booking, here are some specific places worth considering, what to order and how much to prepare.

1. New Lane Hawker Centre — Get a Proper Penang Dinner First

Location: Lorong Baru, George Town
Best time: 6 PM–8 PM
Suggested budget: RM20–35 per person

Before heading to the bars, stop at New Lane Hawker Centre. This street-food spot operates along Lorong Baru, off Macalister Road, with stalls preparing food directly beside the road.

There are plenty of dishes to choose from, but three are particularly worth considering: duck-egg char koay teow, fried oyster omelette and char koay kak. The last one consists of rice cakes fried with egg, preserved radish and dark soy sauce. It’s a good choice if you’ve already eaten char koay teow several times during your trip.

A recent visitor reported paying RM16 for duck-egg char koay teow. That’s an example rather than a guaranteed menu price, but it gives you an idea of what to expect. Your total will depend on the stall, additional dishes and drinks.

One thing first-time visitors sometimes miss is the coffee-shop seating arrangement. If you take a table belonging to a coffee shop and order food from nearby hawkers, you may be expected to purchase your drinks from that coffee shop.

New Lane generally opens in the late afternoon and finishes around 10–11 PM. Wednesday is commonly listed as its closing day, so choose another dinner spot if you’re visiting midweek. Arriving around 6:30 PM is a sensible way to avoid spending too much of the evening waiting for your food.

2. Chulia Court — Dinner, Drinks & Live Music Under One Roof

Location: 355–359 Lebuh Chulia, George Town
Best for: Dinner with friends, drinks and live entertainment
Bar hours: Published as 1 PM–2 AM daily

If you’d prefer a proper sit-down restaurant that turns into a nightlife venue later, Chulia Court is a practical choice.

It occupies a large heritage property on Chulia Street, with a North Indian restaurant, bar and entertainment areas. Instead of finishing dinner and then searching for a different place to drink, you can stay for the evening when there’s a live performance scheduled.

The food is worth paying attention to. Chulia Court’s published menu information includes Butter Chicken at RM35 and Garlic Naan at RM8. If you’re sharing with friends, the non-vegetarian Chulia Platter, featuring several tandoori chicken preparations, has been published at RM45++. The restaurant also offers Chicken Tikka Masala at RM33 and Afghani Mutton Rogan Josh at RM46. These are published menu prices, not guaranteed final bills; service charges and applicable taxes may be additional.

For a straightforward dinner, Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan make a reasonable starting order. If several people are dining together, add the Chulia Platter rather than ordering individual starters for everyone.

The bar promotes happy hours from 3 PM to 9 PM, except during public holidays and their eves. Live music schedules vary, so contact the venue before visiting for a particular performance. Chulia Court also has its own parking facilities, although you should arrange transport instead of driving after drinking.

Worth choosing when: You want dinner and entertainment in one place, especially with colleagues or a group of friends.

3. The Canteen at ChinaHouse — Go Here for the Music

Location: 183B Lebuh Victoria, George Town
Operating hours: Approximately 5 PM–12:30 AM
Best for: Live bands, R&B, jazz and an evening with music

If music matters more to you than fancy cocktails, The Canteen at ChinaHouse deserves a place on your list.

This isn’t a venue where you simply hope someone might be performing. The Canteen regularly publishes its entertainment schedules, with musicians and bands appearing across different evenings.

Its August and September 2026 programmes included performances by Instyle Pockets, Acidic Bunch, Good Trouble and String Theory. Instyle Pockets has been featured for R&B performances, while Acidic Bunch has played weekend party nights.

Recent schedules advertised performances from around 8 PM to 10:45 PM on weekdays and from 9 PM until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Some special live-band nights have also carried a minimum spend of RM50 per guest.

These arrangements change depending on the event. Check The Canteen’s latest announcements and reserve a table if there’s a band you want to catch. For reservations, the published contact numbers include 04-263 7299 and 011-6325 7299.

I’d pick The Canteen over an ordinary pub when there’s a band worth seeing. If the night’s performers don’t appeal to you, there are better places to spend your money than attending solely because the venue is famous.

4. Backdoor Bodega — For Cocktails You Won’t Find at Every Bar

Location: 37 Jalan Gurdwara, George Town
Operating hours: Generally 8 PM–1 AM, Thursday to Monday
Best for: Creative cocktails and a small speakeasy atmosphere

Backdoor Bodega started as a concealed bar behind a clothing shop, presenting itself as an overpriced pin shop. The unusual entrance is entertaining, but its cocktails are the main reason to visit.

The bar received the World’s Best Cocktail Menu award in 2025 and has featured in Asia’s 50 Best Bars extended rankings. Its menu incorporates ingredients associated with Penang, including nutmeg, ulam, locally produced soy sauce and belacan.

If you’re not sure what to order, ask about Kelapa Hotak, which combines coconut and kaya-inspired flavours, or the Ulam Mojito, a local interpretation of the familiar mojito. Another option is the Georgetown Gimlet if you prefer a cocktail built around a sharper, citrus-driven style. Confirm what’s currently available, since signature menus change.

Backdoor Bodega is a smaller venue, and securing a seat matters more than it does at an ordinary open-fronted pub. Make a reservation through its official website rather than arriving with a large group and expecting immediate seating.

It is generally closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so check your date before planning the night around it.

My recommendation: Choose this bar if you enjoy experimenting with cocktails. If all you want is several bottles of beer, there are more economical places to drink.

5. Magazine 63 — Chinese-Themed Cocktails Until 2 AM

Location: 63 Jalan Magazine, George Town
Operating hours: 8 PM–2 AM daily
Best for: Chinese-inspired cocktails and late-night drinks

Magazine 63 takes a different approach to the hidden-bar concept. Its interior draws from traditional Chinese inn designs, while the drinks use names and references from Chinese culture.

The official menu features cocktails such as 女儿红 (Nv Er Hong), 四大美女 (Four Beauties) and 东方不败 (Invincible East).

If you prefer a fruity drink, ask about Invincible East, which the venue describes using vodka, peach, cranberry juice and orange juice. Another option is Four Beauties, whose listed ingredients include vodka, coconut, melon and pineapple. The names might be playful, but they’re useful clues when deciding which flavour profile to try.

Magazine 63 also makes sense as a later stop because it operates until 2 AM. You can go for dinner elsewhere, enjoy another activity and still have time for a drink here.

Its website provides a reservation contact at 017-636 3551. If you’re visiting on a Friday or Saturday night, booking is preferable to waiting for seats to become available.

Check the current drinks menu for pricing before ordering. I couldn’t verify a reliable individual cocktail price list, so there is no reason to pretend every drink costs the same amount.

6. Cocktails & Shots — A Good Choice When You’re Drinking Alone

Location: 102 Lebuh Cintra, George Town
Opening: 7 PM, Tuesday to Sunday; closed Monday
Published prices: Shots from RM20, cocktails from RM45

Not everybody visiting Penang has a group to go out with. If you’re travelling alone and don’t fancy sitting at a large table by yourself, Cocktails & Shots is worth considering.

The venue is hidden behind a bookshelf entrance, and its concept is simple: instead of handing you an extensive printed menu, the bartender asks what kinds of flavours and drinks you enjoy.

You can explain that you prefer whisky, something citrus-based or a cocktail that isn’t too sweet. The bartender then creates or recommends something based on your preferences.

The bar’s published starting prices are RM20 for shots and RM45 for cocktails, with no cover charge or minimum spend. That makes the cost easier to understand before walking in.

Its small, bartender-led format is the main attraction. If you want to ask questions about drinks, sit at the counter and enjoy a more personal bar experience, this is a reasonable option.

Friday and Saturday closing time is listed as 1:30 AM; other operating evenings generally finish at 12:30 AM.

7. Gravity Rooftop Bar — Drinks with a View

Location: Level 24, G Hotel Kelawai, 2 Persiaran Maktab
Operating hours: 5 PM–midnight, Sunday to Thursday; until 1 AM on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays
Best for: Rooftop drinks and small groups

Gravity is worth considering if you’d rather start the evening looking over Penang’s skyline than heading straight into a busy street bar.

The bar occupies Level 24 of G Hotel Kelawai, with both an evening view and an established drinks programme. It’s also a useful choice for those staying near Gurney.

There are several actual promotions worth knowing about. G Hotel’s October–December 2026 offers include 10 mugs of beer from RM165 nett and a buy-one-free-one promotion on selected house-pour spirits and wines.

The beer package works out to RM16.50 per mug when buying ten, but obviously makes more sense for a group than someone drinking alone. If you’re visiting with one friend, check which drinks qualify for the buy-one-free-one promotion instead.

The venue also advertises live solo music by Jay Parcosa from 9 PM, Tuesday to Sunday, with longer sets on weekends according to its promotional schedule.

Gravity is better treated as an alternative evening starting point, not another stop you must squeeze into a George Town bar crawl. If you’ve already settled into the bars around Chulia Street, travelling out just for one more drink may not be worthwhile.

8. Loud Speaker New World Park — When Your Group Wants Karaoke

Location: New World Park, 102 Jalan Burma
Operating hours: 11 AM–3 AM daily
Best for: Private-room karaoke and late-night group entertainment

If you’re out with several friends and everyone has had enough of sitting at bars, Loud Speaker at New World Park is another option.

It offers private karaoke rooms rather than a public stage, which is useful for groups who want to sing Mandopop, English songs or a mixture of both without performing in front of strangers.

The branch occupies units E2–E6 at New World Park and is listed as operating until 3 AM. The late closing time gives you flexibility, but don’t assume rooms will be available when you arrive.

Check the Loud Speaker website or its booking channels for current session packages. Prices depend on the room, time, guest count and promotions, so confirm the total instead of assuming a fixed per-person charge.

Karaoke works best as the main late-night activity rather than something squeezed between several cocktail bars. Reserve a slot after dinner and decide whether you still want another drink afterwards.

9. Considering an Escort Booking in Penang?

Not everyone visiting Penang wants to spend the whole night moving between public entertainment venues. Some men may also be interested in arranging time with an escort.

If that is part of your plan, it’s better to check the details before going out, particularly if you’ve already scheduled dinner, a live performance or another activity.

You can view the available girls through RosyLove’s Penang escort service. The page lets you browse the profiles and directs you to check the individual package and rate information before contacting the team through Telegram.

A sensible first enquiry should include the girl or profile you’ve chosen, your preferred date, starting time and meeting location. More importantly, get the actual total price before confirming anything.

Ask which booking durations are available, whether incall or outcall arrangements are offered, whether a room is provided or must be arranged separately, and whether transportation or other charges apply. Also clarify the payment method, cancellation terms and any package limitations. These details should be confirmed directly, rather than assuming they’re identical for every profile.

If you’re staying at a hotel, check its visitor rules in advance. A booking arrangement does not automatically mean your accommodation permits outside visitors.

RosyLove confirms availability after receiving an enquiry, so the profiles shown should not be treated as guaranteed same-night availability. Making arrangements before your evening begins is more practical than trying to organise everything after midnight.

10. After Midnight — Nasi Kandar Beratur Original

Location: 98 Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, George Town
Operating hours: Approximately 9:30 PM–6 AM daily
Best for: Nasi kandar after a night out

For supper, try Nasi Kandar Beratur Original near Kapitan Keling Mosque. It’s a long-established night-time nasi kandar shop that operates when most ordinary dinner venues have already closed.

The name Beratur means to queue, and that is something to expect when visiting. The shop is known for drawing late-night customers, and queues can be substantial around opening time.

The dishes to look for include ayam ros, curry chicken, squid curry and mutton curry. If you want several gravies over your rice, ask for kuah campur. Before adding seafood or large portions of meat, ask for the price because those items can increase your total substantially.

There isn’t a reliable current fixed price for a complete plate, so bring enough cash and check what you’re ordering. If you’re not interested in queuing for 30 minutes or more, don’t make this an essential part of your night.

For a late supper after drinks, however, it’s a more suitable option than relying on older recommendations that incorrectly describe other nasi kandar shops as open 24 hours.

How Much Does a Night Out in Penang Actually Cost?

A night out doesn’t have to be expensive, but cocktails, premium food and additional transport can increase the bill quickly.

For example, you could budget RM20–35 for dinner at New Lane, RM45 for one cocktail at Cocktails & Shots and roughly RM15–30 as a planning allowance for a simple late supper. That would put your food and one-drink budget at approximately RM80–110 before transport. Additional cocktails will increase it by roughly RM45 or more each, depending on the venue.

If you’re spending the evening at Chulia Court, its published RM35 Butter Chicken and RM8 Garlic Naan give you a concrete starting point, before applicable charges and drinks. If you’re meeting friends at Gravity, the RM165 beer package may work out better than individually priced drinks, provided your group actually wants that quantity.

For private karaoke, get the room-package price before confirming. Likewise, any separate escort booking should have its own confirmed budget based on the selected profile, duration and arrangements rather than being included in a general nightlife spending estimate.

Transport costs are variable, so check Grab rather than relying on a fixed fare. Late-night demand, heavy rain and pickup locations can affect your final price.

How I’d Plan One Night in George Town

If your priority is food and cocktails, arrive at New Lane around 6:30 PM for dinner. After eating, make your way to Backdoor Bodega for an 8 PM reservation, assuming it’s one of the nights the bar operates. Enjoy a cocktail or two without rushing, then decide whether to continue at Magazine 63 around 10 PM. Both venues have distinctive drinks, so there is little reason to visit five bars just to say you’ve been to all of them.

If you’re hungry after midnight, Nasi Kandar Beratur is an option before returning to your accommodation. Allow time for the queue and take a Grab when the distance or weather makes walking inconvenient.

For a music-focused evening, I’d choose either Chulia Court or The Canteen at ChinaHouse. Eat at Chulia Court if you want dinner and drinks in the same venue, or dine earlier elsewhere and head to The Canteen for a scheduled band. Check the performance time before making your reservation.

For a group that prefers activities, start with Gravity for drinks around sunset and consider booking Loud Speaker for karaoke later. That makes more sense than trying to visit both rooftop bars and every speakeasy on the same night.

If your plans include an escort booking, confirm the booking details separately and leave adequate time between activities. There’s no benefit in paying for an entertainment session you have to abandon halfway through.

A Few Things Worth Checking Before Going Out

Penang’s nightlife hours can change, especially around public holidays and private events. Some cocktail bars operate only on selected days, and live music venues may impose minimum spending for special performances.

Bring some cash for hawker food and supper, even if most of your spending will be by card or e-wallet. Use Grab after drinking, particularly when travelling between venues outside comfortable walking distance.

Most importantly, don’t fill your evening with too many stops. One good dinner, a venue with entertainment you actually enjoy and a proper late-night meal can make a much better Penang night out than rushing through a long list of famous places.
